Shirley Robertson OBE is Scottish Double Olympic gold medallist sailor, broadcaster and presenter. She hosts the Shirley Robertson’s Sailing Podcast.
Shirley had been sailing dinghy’s since she was seven years old but it was in 1992 when she became the youngest member of the British Sailing Team at the Barcelona Olympics that year. Over the next few years, medals and trophy’s had started flooding in. She competed at Atlanta in 96 when she came fourth and this spurred her on to even greater success when she picked up a Gold in the Europe Class dinghy event at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
Just four years later Shirley Robertson OBE was in Athens. She had teamed up with Sarah Webb and Sarah Ayton to win her second Olympic gold and at the same time grabbing the World’s headlines with being affectionately named ‘Three Blondes In A Boat’. That same year Shirley was named ‘Female World Sailor of the Year’ by the International Sailing Federation. She was then awarded an MBE and later in 2005 received an OBE.
After the Olympics, Shirley has continued sailing. She became the first female skipper in an Extreme 40 class catamaran. This was a new class of boat first seen in 2005. It was a 40 feet long, carbon fibre boat with a top speed of almost 40 knots.
RECENT TIMES:
Shirley picked up the commentating bug not long after Athens. She has worked with many channels including the BBC. She is known the World over for her work on CNN International’s sailing programme “Mainsail“.
2022 sees Shirley Robertson join forces with fellow yachtswoman Dee Caffari as they compete in the 2000 nautical mile event that is the Round Britain and Ireland Race. This is classed as a Category 1 event in World sailing’s Special Offshore Regulations.
