Daniel Finkelstein is a Tory peer, an award winning journalist, a columnist for The Times and a former Times executive editor. He is also a superb after dinner speaker with a great sense of humour (his Twitter handle is DannyTheFink).
Politics:
Daniel Finkelstein or Danny as he is known to his friends, became a member of the Social Democrat Party in the early 80’s. He first became a parliamentary candidate in the election of 1987. One year later he followed the SDP leader David Owen when the party agreed to merge with the Liberal Party. David Owen was against the merger and continued the SDP along with his party followers. Just four years later David Owen resigned and Daniel led a group of party members, who decided to switch to the Conservatives.
In 1995 he became Director of the CRD (Conservative Research Dept.) and became an adviser to the then Prime Minister John Major. Two years later the Conservatives were now in opposition. Daniel was awarded an OBE and was now advising the opposition leader, William Hague.
Journalist:
It was in 1990 Danny Finkelstein became editor of the UK’s 1st Internet and data comms. paper called Connexion.
He became a team member of writing for The Times in 2001. Three years later he was now The Times’ Comment Editor, a post he kept for four years. His next appointment from March 2004 to June 2008. He became Chief Leader Writer in June 2008.
As Comment Editor, The Times launched a comment blog which Danny was writing and editing. This also allowed him to offer his personal opinion on the web comments.
Daniel is also a columnist in The Jewish Chronicle and V.P. of the Jewish Leadership Council.
In 2022 he was made a director of Chelsea FC, a club he has been a lifelong fan of. He also has a weekly football stats. column called the Fink Tank. Danny has been doing this for over 20 years every Saturday in The Times newspaper.
Honours & Awards:
He has been awarded Political Columnist of the Year four times.
An honorary Doctor of Science degree was presented by London’s City University in 2011.
In 2013 he took his seat in the House of Lords having been made a life peer with the titles: The Lord Finkelstein OBE and Baron Finkelstein of Pinner in the London Borough of Harrow.
Books:
In 2023 Daniel Finkelstein published a book about his parents and their experiences during the second World War. It is called, Hitler, Stalin, Mum and Dad: A Family Memoir of Miraculous Survival.
