John Bercow – Former Speaker of the House of Commons & British Politician
The Rt Hon John Bercow served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for 22 years, including a decade as Speaker of the House of Commons. He retired on October 31, 2019, leaving a legacy of reform and modernisation in British politics.
Leadership During a Defining Era
As Speaker, Bercow presided over Parliament during one of the most tumultuous periods in UK history. He oversaw critical debates on austerity, the formation of the 2010 coalition government, and the complex Brexit negotiations. He was the first Speaker since World War II to manage proceedings under four different Prime Ministers.
Political Career and Advocacy
Bercow entered Parliament in 1997 as the Conservative MP for Buckingham. Over time, he held several shadow cabinet roles, including Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury and Shadow Secretary for International Development. In a notable political stand, he resigned from the front bench to support the Labour Government’s policy on adoption rights for unmarried couples.

Reforms and Modernization as Speaker
John Bercow’s tenure brought significant parliamentary reforms. He drastically expanded the use of Urgent Questions, compelling ministers to address 685 pressing issues directly in the Commons. John extended Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs), enabling more robust debate.
He modernized Parliament by removing outdated customs like knee breeches and silk stockings. He also replaced the shooting range in the Commons with a nursery, promoting inclusivity.
Bercow welcomed Barack Obama to address Parliament, but opposed inviting Donald Trump, citing concerns over racism and sexism. His commitment to youth engagement led him to allow the UK Youth Parliament to debate in the Commons chamber—a tradition he chaired for a decade.
