Graham Gooch – Inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame
Graham Gooch OBE is one of England’s most prolific cricketers and a true legend of the sport. Renowned as a formidable batsman, he represented his country across three decades, playing in three World Cup finals and serving as England captain. With over 67,000 runs in his career, Graham is recognised as one of the most successful batsmen of his generation. Today, he is a sought-after speaker and event host, known for his positivity, leadership insights and ability to inspire audiences with stories from the crease.
Credentials and Impact
Graham’s first-class career began in 1973, and he went on to build a reputation as one of cricket’s most technically assured and determined batsmen. Across nearly 500 caps, he achieved a batting average of 49.01 and became one of only 25 players to score over 100 first-class centuries. Highlights of his international career include scoring a record 456 runs in a Test match in 1990 and amassing the most runs in a series by an England captain that same year. His longevity saw him represent England in World Cup finals in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s.
Following his retirement in 2000, Graham turned to coaching, leading Essex County Cricket Club as head coach from 2001 to 2005, before continuing as their specialist batting coach. He also served as England’s batting coach from 2012, playing a pivotal role in developing the next generation of international talent.
