Dr Steve Conroy is a highly respected specialist in addiction medicine in Scotland. He serves as the Lead Medical Practitioner for NHS Lanarkshire’s addiction services. In this role, he oversees one of Scotland’s busiest Primary Care addiction systems. He has held this influential position since 2004. As a result, he has shaped treatment approaches across the region for many years.
Medical Background and Early Development
Steve graduated from Glasgow University in 1990. He initially trained as a GP and worked within community practice. During this period, he developed a strong interest in addiction treatment. He created a methadone clinic for local patients and gained vital early experience. This work encouraged him to specialise fully in addiction medicine. His early commitment continues to influence his clinical approach today.
Policy Leadership, Research and National Influence
Steve now plays a key role in shaping clinical policy across NHS Lanarkshire. He writes guidelines and protocols used throughout the service. His work on safer prescribing has reduced benzodiazepine use in opioid treatment. This change has contributed to fewer drug‑related deaths in the region.
