Monty Halls is a marine biologist and also one of the countries leading explorers. He was catapulted into the public eye in early 2002 when he led a multi-national team of adventurers and scientists on an expedition to South East India. This was an attempt to discover the ruins of a lost civilisation, but beneath the sea. It was a discovery of global significance which established Monty as one of the new stars of British exploration.
On the back of this and other expeditions, Monty was also invited to take part in a major Channel 4 project. It was called Superhumans and was screened in 2004. This two hour television special pitted high achievers from all disciplines in Britain against one another. It was a series of tests devised by experts in human performance.
Monty Halls also presented a series for Channel 4 involving global exploration. This series was seen as a forerunner to a considerably more comprehensive series screened in 2005. He is also wrote his first book for Ultimate Sports publications. Monty is a prolific writer. His latest book published in 2022 is Commando: The Inside Story of Britain’s Royal Marines
GREAT OCEAN ADVENTURES:
More recent television series were Channel 5’s Great Ocean Adventures which ran to a second series and also repeated on Animal Planet. Monty set out to discover the truth behind mythical creatures of the ocean that have bewitched and had also terrified man for as long as he has explored the sea.
Viewers were taken to some of the most extreme and remote locations on earth. Monty used all of his skills as an explorer and marine biologist, as well as earning the trust of local people. Travelling to Japan, Monty was determined to seek out the Giant Spider Crab with a leg span of up to 12 feet, which is rarely encountered by divers. Diving to an incredible 50 metres, surrounded by caves, caverns and overhangs, Monty was on a mission to find one.
In Tonga, Monty is enthralled by the humpback whale and, slips into the water to approach forty tons of whale as it hangs in blue ocean. Closer to home, a giant Turtle is the talk of the town in Devon. Great Ocean Adventures sees ancient knowledge meeting with modern technology, which guarantees lasting encounters with some of the most exciting creatures of the seas.
GREAT ESCAPE:
2009 saw a 5-part BBC series ‘Monty Halls’ Great Escape’ for BBC 2. This featured Monty and also his dog Rueben’s experiences living in a croft for 6 months on the Applecross Peninsula in Wester Ross, Scotland.
A second series was also broadcast in 2010, called Monty Halls’ Great Hebridean Escape. This is where he moved into a restored crofter’s cottage on the Hebridean island of North Uist. He also becomes a volunteer wildlife ranger.
Monty is an adventurer in the finest traditions of British exploration. He was also a former Royal Marines Officer, he was the first to get an underwater picture of a rare crocodile species in the jungle pools of the mysterious Maya Mountains in Belize. In late 2001 he then led a pioneering project 270 kilometres in sea kayaks up the inland shore of one of Africa’s great rift lakes, photographing new underwater species and also contacting remote villages and indigenous peoples en route. He has also photographed sharks in cave systems in South Africa, and led projects in Indonesia, Honduras and the Philippines. His television programmes have appeared on Channel 4, Channel 5, Carlton, Discovery, and also the National Geographic channel.
