Alastair Campbell is well known for being Tony Blair’s press secretary and Director of Communications and Strategy. He was given the post of official spokesman in 1994. These days he is a writer, communicator, consultant, mental health campaigner and has a podcast which with thousands of subscribers, is one of the most popular, political podcasts in the UK.
Before moving in the political arena, Alastair Campbell studied modern languages at Cambridge and carved out a career in journalism, becoming news editor of Today at the age of 29. Alastair’s career in the media was so successful that he became political editor of the Daily Mirror. Whilst holding this post, he was also one of Labour leader Neil Kinnock’s closest advisers.
Alastair then moved on to take up the role that was to eventually make him a household name, spokesman for Tony Blair. The Labour victory in 1997 saw Alastair become chief press secretary to the new Prime Minister, Tony Blair. He remained in that post until his resignation in 2003.

The Rest is Politics podcast has been so successful it has been taken on by Ch4 for the 2024 July General Election run-up. It is due to be aired from the week commencing the 27th of May. It will be part of Channel 4’s election coverage.

Alastair is a keen soccer fan supporting Burnley Football Club and strangely enough, he also plays the Bagpipes. He actually made a film about this which ended up with him in Glasgow at The Royal Concert Hall. He played in front of an audience of 2.5 thousand. During the Covid pandemic he played in his street for the NHS.
