Lord William Hague was Leader of the Conservative Party in opposition from 1997-2001, having served in John Major’s Government as Secretary of State for Wales and Minister for Pensions. He re-joined the shadow cabinet in 2005 as Shadow Foreign Secretary.
William Hague is perhaps best known for his skill in parliamentary debate, particularly in some 200 exchanges and debates with Tony Blair. Channel 4 viewers voted him ‘Politician of the Year’ in 2001 and he was the Spectator’s ‘Parliamentarian of the Year’ in 1998.
From 2010 to July 2014 he was Foreign Secretary and in 2014 was Leader of the House of Commons up until the 2015 general election, when he intimated his planned retirement.
William Hague has been an adviser to the JCB Group, a non-executive Director of AES Engineering and he joined the Political Council of Terra Firma Capital Partners.
A consummate speaker with a superb wit. He was once described by Hillary Clinton as the ‘David Beckham of speakers!’ He is also an author of several publications, mainly historical biographies of politicians.
In 2015 after standing down from his position as Leader of the House of Commons, William Hague was awarded a life peerage to become The Right Honourable The Lord Hague of Richmond.
