Ally McCoist’s first professional football club was St Johnstone F.C. where he scored 22 goals in 38 games. Several clubs wanted McCoist but it was Sunderland who beat off the efforts of Rangers to sign the rising star. After only 56 appearances, Rangers manager John Greig signed him in 1983.
From his time at Rangers, Ally McCoist has an impressive array of achievements including 10 league championship medals, a Scottish Cup medal and 9 League Cup medals. He was Europe’s top goal scorer. Twice, in 1992 and 1993, as well as being named Scotland’s player of the Year in 1992. Ally McCoist is Rangers’ top ever goalscorer (with 251 league goals and a total of 355 in all competitions). He was also Scotland’s fifth highest scorer with 19 goals in 61 matches.
He is a member of the Scotland Football Hall of Fame, having gained 61 International caps.
Ally finshed his career at Kilmarnock, where he spent two seasons with manager Bobby Williamson. In 2004 he joined the Scotland national team coaching staff under his former manager Walter Smith.
Ally is probably now best known for his management of Rangers FC. From the late 90’s Ally was part of the “A Question Of Sport” team from 1996 to 2007. After this he joined Walter Smith at Rangers as assistant manager.
In 2011 Ally took over the helm at Rangers. He saw them through what was probably the worst financial crisis in the history of the team. Rangers went into liquidation. This led to a new company being formed, The Rangers Football Club Limited. However there were conditions which resulted in the team losing their place in the League. On top if that, a ban on transfers for one year was imposed.
Ally remained steadfast and despite the club failing to secure the transfer of Rangers’ place in the Scottish Premier League, Rangers were accepted into the Scottish Football League. However, instead of being placed in the First Division as most had hoped, to Ally’s dismay, Rangers ended up in the lowest division. This is the Third or 4th tier as it is known. However, the fans never gave up. Record attendances were noted and it didn’t take long before Rangers had moved up to the 2nd tier. As of December 2015, Rangers were back, sitting top of the Championship.
In 2015 Ally decided to move on and left Rangers to go back to his work in TV and also as a Radio pundit.
Ally has a great sense of humour and dry wit and no matter how large the audience is his laid back speaking style creates a very intimate atmosphere.
