Mike Catt OBE is the legendary England Rugby Internationalist and fly half, centre for London Irish.
Michael John Catt was born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Mike’s mother was English, and in a break from his academic studies he toured England. At that time, South Africa was banned from all international sporting competitions because of their apartheid policy.
Mike made his England debut in 1994 and was part of England’s 1995 Grand Slam winning side. He also played in the 1995 Rugby World Cup and in the 1997 British Lions tour to South Africa. After the retirement of Will Carling and Jeremy Guscott in 1999, Mike Catt became an inside centre. Here he was alongside the equally legendary Johnny Wilkinson.
Honours:
Mike was awarded an MBE just after England’s World Cup victory. Later he was again rewarded, this time with an OBE in 2011 for services to rugby.
Mike was named Guinness Premiership Player of the Season 2005/2006
He performed heroically for England in the 2007 Rugby World Cup, leading England to the final, eventually losing to South Africa.
Mike Catt set a record for England with his eleventh Test appearance in matches against Australia, when he ran out for the International team at Melbourne in June 2006.
The 2007 Rugby World Cup was an extraordinary experience for Mike Catt. Mike went from being dropped and distraught to reach the heights of playing in the final itself and all in the space of three short weeks. Having announced his retirement, he has also released his auto biography, the book entitled ‘Landing On My Feet: My Story‘.
Never one to avoid controversy, the fall-out from Mike’s book has been spectacular to say the least and will continue to keep Mike’s name to the forefront of the sports news. There has been an almost endless media furore with countless journalists trying to contact Mike Catt over his comments about England coach, Brian Ashton and other controversial statements.
A devoted family man to his wife Ali and daughter Evie, Mike continues to inspire the younger players coming through.
