June Sarpong was the BBC’s very first Director of Creative Diversity, a role which she stepped down from in 2022. During her time there she helped the BBC in becoming more inclusive and representative of the broad and diverse audience it serves.
Many people will know June for her earlier work with MTV and Ch4’s T4. This is where she made a name for herself with an exclusive interview in 2005 with the then Prime Minister, Tony Blair. That same year she was host to London’s Make Poverty History event. Three years later, she was on stage with Will Smith hosting the 90th birthday celebrations of Nelson Mandela in Hyde Park.
June is an ambassador for The Prince’s Trust and was awarded an OBE for her services to broadcasting in 2020.
Her TV accomplishments are too numerous to mention but they include being a panellist on Loose Women and Sky’s The Pledge. She covered the Royal Wedding, co- presented Sky’s The Art Show and hosted her own series, My Faith and Me.
In 2010 in New York, June Sarpong co-founded and launched WIE (Women: Inspiration & Enterprise).
It was 2017 before we saw June’s first book release: ‘Diversify: Six Degrees of Integration‘. In it she covers the costs of discrimination and the benefits of diversity. Her second book ‘The Power Of Women‘ explores feminism and why it works for everyone. June’s most recent book, ‘The Power of Privilege: How White People Can Challenge Racism‘ was released in October 2020 and offers practical steps and action-driven solutions so that those who have been afforded privilege, can begin undoing the limiting beliefs held by society, and help build a fairer future for all.
