As I said in my thanks to you at the staff meeting, if ever there is a mother who deserves the ‘Super Mum’ award, it is yourself!
NHS South Warwickshire
Vikie Shanks talks on Mental Health and Wellness. She is also a mother of seven children. Six are Autistic, one is also Dyslexic and two have Cerebral Palsy. Vikie’s husband also had severe mental problems and in 2007 she was widowed. He had taken his own life. This left Vikie to bring up the children on her own.
Vikie Shanks has since been described as a “super-mum”. She has written an inspirational best selling book “Unravelled” telling her true and also very personal story of her own upbringing. It’s about her life with her husband and his increasingly erratic behaviour which resulted in his suicide at the age of 51.
In 2013 the BBC planned to turn Vikie’s story into a documentary. Despite the filming progressing the production was taken over. Afterwards, a decision was then taken to change from a documentary to a film for cinema. It also took another three years, when in 2017 “Kingdom of Us” was released by Netflix. The media and press attention that followed was enormous with Vikie appearing on Woman’s Hour, Loose Women, ITV’s This Morning and also in numerous press articles.

Vikie Shanks delivered her first ever TEDx talk and is now regularly invited to speak on a number of subjects. These also include Vikie’s campaign for better understanding and awareness of Autism, Mental Health and also Suicide.
