Alan Dedicoat is the legendary ‘Voice of the Balls’ on BBC’s National Lottery show. He is also well known as one of Terry Wogan’s sidekicks on Wake up to Wogan on BBC radio 2. It was his old sparring partner, Wogan who christened him ‘the Voice of the Balls’.
Born at an early age in Hollywood (a village in North Worcestershire), Alan was educated at the prestigious King Edward VI school for Boys in Birmingham. Later he was off to Birmingham University. He was on the road to entering the conservative world of the law but, seduced by hospital radio, opted for the world of showbusiness. Beginning humbly, one might say, he started at BBC Radio Birmingham.
Radio 2 beckons:
Four years at Pebble Mill, Birmingham, were followed by another four years at BBC Radio Devon. Then in 1987, the great metropolis beckoned and Alan joined the Presentation Department of BBC Radio 2. This was at Broadcasting House in London. Since then he was heard reading the news and voicing some of the Network’s many trails and promotions. He was known for joining in with Terry Wogan’s lively banter, where he had been nicknamed ‘Deadly’. Alan led a team of a dozen or so announcers who keep the network on the air 24 hours-a-day, 7 days-a-week. He did this from a tiny studio, deep within Broadcasting House. Alan retired from the BBC in 2015
From 2004 Alan has been the announcer on BBC 1’s Strictly Come Dancing. He also announces on the US version, Dancing with the Stars.
The Big Red Bus:
In 2005 Alan with a group of 5 radio broadcasters, including Ken Bruce and Charles Nove purchased a Routemaster bus, London’s iconic red double decker. The bus was then made avaibale for hire for all sorts of events and was regularly seen around London. The company they set up ran the bus for 13 years.
But, it is for his role as the ‘out-of-vision’ voice, calling out the Lottery numbers on the twice weekly National Lottery Draw on BBC1 that Alan is famous for and he still puts his VOG (voice of God) to use at all sorts of events, both with live appearances and specialist recordings which Alan does in his home recording studio.
