Ann Widdecombe was the Conservative MP for Maidstone for 20 years. She was minister for the Dept. of Employment and the Home Office. She was also both shadow secretary for Home and Health, a good grounding for comedy, some would say. Not many former Government ministers have taken up the role of Celebrity with the same verve and panache displayed by Anne Widdecombe.
Celebrity TV:
It was in 2010, that Ann burst on to our screens. This was when she entered series 8 of BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing. Suddenly memories of John Sergeant, two years previously, came flooding back, as Ann remained on the show week after week. There was no need this time for any of the TOG’s (Terry’s Old Geezers or Gals) that supported John, to keep Ann voted in, as the general public loved and laughed at Ann’s antics on the dance floor. She almost made it into the semi finals but was eventually voted off in week 10, just when Anton thought they might actually win.
This was not her first time on a reality TV show. Back in 2002 Ann was in Celebrity Fit Club trying to lose weight. That same year Louis Theroux did a documentary on Ann’s life which she participated in. She has appeared in the quiz shows Have I Got News For You and Cleverdicks plus numerous other documentaries and TV specials.
Panto:
Playing a pantomime dame for a second year alongside her former “Strictly” judge, Craig Revel Horwood, Ann continued to hone her skills. This was on the footlights of the Swan theatre, High Wycombe in December. She has since appeared in panto five times.
When she is not facing the spotlight, Ann Widdecombe can be heard speaking at dinners and events up and down the country.
