David Nutt (Prof) DM, FRCP, FRCPsych, FMedSci is probably best known by the public for his role as Chair of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD). He was spectacularly sacked by the then Home Secretary in 2009. This was for speaking publicly about scientific evidence on drugs and alcohol.
Professor David Nutt has since founded the Independent Scientific Committee on Drugs (now called Drug Science), of which he is Chair. He is also the Edmund J Safra Professor of Neuropsychopharmacology. One other title is Head of the Department of Neuropsychopharmacology and Molecular Imaging at Imperial College London.
He broadcasts widely to the general public both on radio and television. David also talks widely to the scientific and medical communities. He continues to be outspoken about drugs, alcohol, the media and politics.
Professor David Nutt is a regular speaker at conferences, events and after dinner. He talks eloquently and funnily about alcohol, drugs and the media. David is known for his off the cuff jokes and relaxed crowd interaction which is his speciality.
David has published a number of books on his work and in 2023 published: Psychedelics: The revolutionary drugs that could change your life – a guide from the expert.
The book sets out to tell us, Psychedelics which have been criminalised for may years, could in fact be used as revolutionary treatments for many mental health conditions. David suggests many conditions like OCD, eating disorders, chronic Pain, PTSD and possibly addiction could all be treated.
