Donald is a former Chairman of the Faculty of Advocates Criminal Bar Association. He has served twice as Rector of St Andrews University between 1993 and 1999 and he is a regular contributor on current affairs on both television and radio. In 1998, Donald published his first novel, the court-room drama Three Verdicts.
