Gemma Cairney is a writer and award winning TV and radio broadcaster. She is passionate about music, fashion and arts and culture among other things. Gemma originally worked at the BBC where she hosted the early morning show on Radio1. In more recent times Gemma Cairney can be seen and heard on Radio4’s The Sound Odyssey. She also broadcasts on Radio6 Music with her show, The Leisure Society with Gemma Cairney.
She set up her own television and broadcasting company Boom Shakalaka Productions in 2015, which ran for seven years.
Gemma is known for her output on radio which has seen her win two Sony Gold awards. She also won a Rose d’Or for her interview with the US model, actress and singer Grace Jones. Her work in the music industry saw her presenting at Glastonbury for the BBC. She also co-presented the BBC’s Hogmanay. This pulled in over twelve million people all glued to their screens. In 2016 Gemma Cairney along with Fearne Cotton and Claudia Winkleman hosted the Music Awards which were also broadcast on BBC1.
On YouTube Gemma hosts a series called Art and Technology. This is where Gemma discusses new tech with a contemporary artist asking, How does new technology affect their art.

In 2017 Gemma Cairney published her book, specifically aimed at younger adults. Open: A Toolkit For How Magic and Messed Up Life Can Be A further two books were to follow in 2018 with Open Your Heart and Open Your Mind
Gemma is now based in Edinburgh. She is a board member for the Jupiter Artland Foundation which is an art and sculpture grounds just outside Edinburgh.
Gemma is also on the board of the Edinburgh Art Festival.
