Gyles Brandreth, speaker, host, actor, writer and former MP. His career has ranged from Pantomime to being Lord Commissioner of the Treasury in John Major’s government. In 1997, he returned to a career in writing and broadcasting. He was regularly heard on LBC’s Sunday evening arts programme Sunday with Gyles Brandreth.

He can be seen on Celebrity Gogglebox discussing that week’s telly with Sheila Hancock who he partnered in 2020 on series 11, 12 and 13 of Great Canal Journeys for Channel4 (Out now on DVD). Gyles is a veteran of shows such as Have I Got News For You and QI. And he occasionally reports on The One Show.
Writing
A prolific writer, Gyles is the children’s publisher with Andre Deutsch and editorial consultant to Whitakers Almanack. He is a former editor-at-large of the Sunday Telegraph Review. His acclaimed children’s book Max the Boy Who Made a Million came out in 1996 and in 1999 Harper Collins published the sequel, Maise the Girl Who Lost Her Head.
In 2018 Gyles Brandreth speaker released Have You Eaten Grandma? a book on the importance of punctuation, grammar and good English. The very funny, Odd Boy Out (released in 2021) became A Sunday Times best seller. Continuing in fun mood, What’s Black and White and Red All Over? came out in 2022. Gyles is a member of Trevor McDonald’s Better English campaign. He founded the National Scrabble Championships.
