John Robertson. Footballer, Coach & Manager, known as Robbo.
Although a Hibernian supporter as a boy, John Robertson signed for Hearts. A superb goal scorer, he set many scoring records. He was prolific in games against Hibs, netting 27 times. So many that he made the quote that the derby games were never over till the fat striker scores.
Despite his record 214 club goals, John did not get the number of Scotland caps his play merited. He was unfairly given the reputation of a penalty box striker, a description that underestimated his link up play. Many people felt that playing outside Glasgow did his international career some damage. He still managed 16 caps, often as a substitute, and scored a couple of goals. It was reputed he remembered the circumstances of every one. A talent that got him the nickname of ceefax.
After finishing playing for Hearts John Robertson moved on to play for Livingston, where he became coach. He worked with both Jim Leishman and Davy Hay. He later moved on to manage Inverness Caledonian Thistle, taking them to their first major final, before becoming manager of Hearts in November 2004 and later Head Coach.
On the 9th May 2005, after spending several hours discussing his future with chief executive Phil Anderton and rejecting a lesser role of Assistant Head Coach. Robbo finally parted company with the club he had been top scorer with. A spell with Livingston soon followed and a couple of years managing East Fife, then after 13 years away from them, in 2017 he was back at Inverness Caledonian Thistle.
