Jonathan Davies is one of the greatest players of his generation. Few sportsmen have been as versatile in both rugby codes as Jonathan Davies OBE. He caused a major sensation when he left Wales and Rugby Union for the professional league.
Always a dynamic points scorer, Jonathan steered his country to third place in the World Cup and victory in the Triple Crown. He was voted World Player of the Year for two years running, before making his controversial move to Widnes – where he quickly silenced the detractors and was named Players’ Player of the Year in his first full season.
The most impressive part of Jonathan’s game was his fitness and physical commitment. With a smaller height and build than is the norm in league rugby, he also displayed a remarkable ability to adapt. When he returned to Wales, more than ten years after his international debut, it was no surprise that he was still good enough to make the first team.
Since his retirement, Jonathan has continued his association with rugby, working for the BBC as a commentator and broadcaster on both codes of the game. He is a superb and popular speaker on both the corporate and sportsman’s dinner circuits.
In 2026, Jonathan was honoured with the appointment of CBE on the 2026 New Year Honours List for Services to People with Cancer and to Broadcasting.
