Laura McConnell is an experienced teacher, with over 10 years of experience in the mainstream primary sector as a classroom teacher, Behaviour Support teacher and also a Support for Learning teacher, in addition to a period as an Acting Principal Teacher. Now working in the Additional Support Needs (ASN/SEN) sector, Laura is back at the roots of her education career which started in a play scheme for disabled children while she was a student at University.
Diagnosed as Autistic, Dyslexic, with ADHD and PTSD as an adult, Laura was finally able to make sense of a lot of her earlier struggles in school, in social dynamics and with eating disorders throughout her earlier life. Now a proud Neurodiversity advocate, Laura is passionate about improving; access to healthcare, outcomes in education and experiences within the criminal justice service for Neurodivergent individuals.
At weekends, you will find Laura on the radio presenting her original interview show ‘Representation Matters’ on Teacher Hug Radio. On ‘Representation Matters’, Laura interviews interesting people about their work and achievements. These range from politics, sports, the arts, the professions, the media, and activism. All share disability in common,
You can also hear Laura discussing the big issues of the week in education live on the ‘Teaching Q&A Phone In’ every second Sunday evening at 8pm, and coming up in spring 2021, she will be live on ‘SEND Help!’ on Sunday mornings discussing issues for children with additional needs and disabilities with a panel of experts.
A keen writer, you can find Laura’s work in a variety of publications including the Times Education Supplement (TES) Scotland and she has contributed chapters to several books, including the upcoming publication by Diverse Educators. She is also publishing her own book on Inclusive Pedagogy with a mainstream education publisher.
Laura brings a wealth of professional expertise mixed with research knowledge and her own lived experience to all her speaking engagements, leaving audiences inspired and ready to make changes!
