Luther Blissett -Awarded an OBE & The Freedom of The Borough of Watford
Luther Blissett is a former professional footballer whose outstanding career saw him become Watford’s record appearance maker and all-time leading goal scorer. Playing in every division for the club, he was a central figure in their rise to the top flight, finishing as the league’s top scorer in their debut First Division season. He also represented England at the senior level, breaking barriers as one of the first Black players to do so, and he remains a celebrated figure both on and off the pitch.
Credentials and Impact
With a career spanning nearly two decades, Luther established himself as a highly respected figure in English football. Making his debut for Watford in the mid-1970s, he quickly became a prolific striker, helping the club climb from the lower divisions to the top flight. His 27-goal season in the First Division earned him national recognition and a move to AC Milan, before returning to England to continue his playing career with Watford, Bournemouth, and several other clubs. His international appearances further solidified his place in football history.
After retirement, he transitioned into coaching and management, working alongside Graham Taylor at Watford and later holding positions with York City, Chesham United, and Hemel Hempstead. In 2016, he was appointed Director of Football at Burnham. Beyond football, Luther extended his leadership to motorsport, helping to create opportunities for aspiring drivers from underrepresented backgrounds. His services to football and the community earned him prestigious civic honours, underlining his lasting impact within sport and society.

He has served as a pundit on Channel 4 and on Bravo’s coverage of ‘Serie A‘, bringing articulate commentary and authentic experience to viewers.
