Matt Lucas is a comedian. He initially showed up on our TV screens as the mad, crazy drummer, George Dawes in Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer’s surreal comedy game Shooting Stars. That was back in 1993. The show went on for another 8 series right up to 2011. However, Matt was up to other things during this time and it was in 2003 Little Britain burst on to our screens. Matt had teamed up with fellow comedian and writer David Walliams. This was back in 2000, with Little Britain originally going out as a comedy show on BBC Radio 4.
Little Britain ended up with regular audiences of almost 10 million and won three BAFTAS.
There were a number of catchphrases generated by the show and probably some still remembered to this day are David Walliams’ “Computer says no”, “Yeah but No But” and “The only Gay in the Village” by the Welsh character Dafydd Thomas, played by Matt Lucas.
Other TV Work:
Since then, Matt Lucas has continually appeared on our screens. He played a character in Dr Who and starred in the comedy fantasy series Krod Mandoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire. Matt also teamed up with Peter Kay and released a version of The Proclaimers 500 Miles for Comic Relief. He is often to be seen in theatre productions like Les Miserables. Matt played Mr Toad in the TV series adaptation of The Wind in the Willows and who could forget Matt’s portrayal of both Tweedledee and Tweedledum? This was in the Tim Burton film, Alice in Wonderland.
What Now:
In more recent times Matt has been stepping in for a number of BBC Radio shows. He still occasionally sits in for Zoe Ball on the Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2.
It was in 2020 Matt joined the team at The Great British Bake Off. He stepped in after Sandi Toksvig and stayed on the show for two years. 2023 sees Matt Lucas star in a new Warner Brothers feature film, Wonka. This is an adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
On the corporate events circuit Matt is now available for hosting and Q&A sessions.
