Quentin Cooper is a science conference host and a journalist who is one of the most familiar and popular voices of science and technology. He hosts a huge range of conferences, talks, broadcasts and meetings in the UK and beyond. But that’s not all, Quentin Cooper is also known as a bit of a film buff. He is often called upon to deliver a movie-related talk.
Described by the Times as both “the world’s most enthusiastic man” and “an expert on everything from pop music to astrophysics”. The Daily Mail said, someone whose “wit and enthusiasm can enliven the dullest of topics”.
He has facilitated at large scale events which have included: MIIFED fusion energy meeting in Monaco; EIE technology investment showcases in London and Edinburgh; international marine research conference EUROCEAN in Rome (part of Italy’s presidency of the EU); PLACES scientific meeting in Bremen; European ENGINEER project conference in the Hague; five public events for Nordic research organisation Nordforsk in Copenhagen; ICT Pioneers awards for the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council in London; first European Conference for Science Journalists in Denmark; Tech X-Change for UK Government’s Transport Systems Catapult; public debates on Innovation Governance and role of gender in research for the European Commission, and both the UK and International finals of the world’s largest science communication competition FameLab.
In 2014 he also hosted and presented many other meetings, debates, programmes and talks for – among others – the Royal Society, Unilever, CERN, British Council, Swedish Research Council, the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Cheltenham Science Festival. Also included are Science Oxford, Kew Gardens, the Science Museum, Malvern Festival of Innovation. He has presented for BBC Radio 4, BBC World Service and BBC2 TV. In addition, he provided media training for a range of organisations. These include, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Elsevier, British Council, British Geological Survey, the Royal College of Physicians and several UK universities.
Quentin previously hosted the EU presidency conferences for Sweden and Denmark, the Times Higher award-winning Knowledge Transfer conferences at Heriot-Watt and St Andrews universities, and the CIB Scotland award-winning real-forensics-meets-crime-fiction event Murder Mystery & Microscopes. Other notable organisations he’s worked for include the Nobel Foundation, BBC Training, BP, BT, Lego, HP, Microsoft and Lucasfilm. Also, NESTA, the European Space Agency, Karolinska Institute, Welcome Trust, GSK, Institute of Physics, British Science Association and Cape Farewell. Plus many universities, science festivals, national governments and research councils.
TV & RADIO:
He’s written and presented several hundred radio and TV programmes. This includes for over a decade, fronting Britain’s most listened to science show. Called the live weekly ‘Material World’ on BBC Radio 4. It was hailed as “quite the best thing on radio” by Bill Bryson. Also “the most accessible, funny and conversational science programme on radio” by the Radio Times. He’s also as of 2014 Creative Director of Science Oxford, one of the UK’s largest science outreach organisations. Quentin writes a regular column for BBC Worldwide linking science and fiction. He has presented, produced and been a regular contributor to countless other science, technology, arts and entertainment programmes. These have been across BBC radio and television, Channel 4, the Discovery Channel, ITV and other channels.
Quentin Cooper‘s “major contribution to the public understanding of science & engineering” has been formally recognised in recent years with honorary doctorates from Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt universities, as well as by being made an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry.
