Rachel Riley is a maths grad. who is very well known for being the resident expert on numbers for both Countdown and 8 Out of Ten Cats Does Countdown.
The Numbers and Letters game:
It was back in 2009 when Rachel Riley beat a thousand applicants for the Countdown job. This was a post previously held for over 20 years by Carol Vorderman. Three years later in 2012, Rachel took on the same role on Ch4’s 8 Out of Ten Cats Does Countdown. Jimmy Carr was to be the host.
This was only meant to be a one off special but over the next 12 months, another three specials were recorded. By the middle of 2013, Channel 4 had ordered the first six part series. With over 150 episodes to date, the rest is history with both Rachel Riley and Jimmy Carr remaining in their roles.

Science:
As well as maths, Rachel Riley also has a background in science and in 2013 she co-presented Ch5’s The Gadget Show. Another science show followed in 2016 with ITV’s It’s Not Rocket Science.
In 2013 Strictly Come Dancing called and in the 11th series, we saw Rachel partner with professional dancer and later to be husband Pavel “Pasha” Kovalev.
Football:
Not so widely known but Rachel is a keen football fan, she supports Man. United. Not long after joining Countdown, she hosted a few programmes on the teams TV channel MUTV. Rachel reached joint 2nd place on Celebrity Mastermind with her specialist subject being, a brief history of Manchester United.
Rachel Riley received an MBE in 2023 for services to Holocaust education. She works tirelessly on raising awareness of rising levels of antisemitism and is also known as a digital censorship activist.
