Stephen Curran’s career in refrigeration may sound cold, but his stories are anything but. With over 45 years in the industry, Stephen has worked with some of the UK’s biggest names in retail, hospitality, and facilities management. Along the way he’s collected a treasure trove of anecdotes that make him a captivating after-dinner speaker. Steve Curran has also spoken at events all over Scotland. Whether it’s golf at Gleneagles with Dougray Scott, or in the boardroom with Henrik Larson or at a charity event with Dame Anne Gloag at her castle in Inverness, Stephen Curran promises some great stories from business and sport that will be A-list quality.
Early Days:
Starting as an apprentice in Glasgow in 1980, Stephen quickly rose through the ranks, winning awards and also building a reputation for turning challenges into opportunities. His career took him from technical sales to boardrooms, where he negotiated multi-million-pound contracts with household names including Asda, Morrisons, Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury’s, Ladbrokes, and BP. At City Refrigeration, he played a pivotal role in growing sales with Asda to £200M, helping the company become Europe’s fastest-growing business.
But Stephen’s appeal lies not just in the numbers. He has a knack for weaving humour and humanity into tales of high-stakes negotiations, unexpected twists of fate, and the colourful characters he’s met along the way. From sampling Guinness while reshaping City Refrigeration Ireland, to securing contracts that transformed local firms into national players, Stephen’s journey is filled with moments that entertain as much as they inspire.
The Soccer Connection:
It was during this time at City Refrigeration, Stephen worked as MD alongside Lord Willie Haughey the former Celtic Football Club Director and this of course led him to working on all sorts of events held at Celtic Park and also other famous grounds. Stephen found himself now working with players, managers and directors of various football clubs all over the UK.
A founding member of RACES. This is the refrigeration and air conditioning engineers society. Stephen recently opened a new refrigeration training academy in Glasgow. He has been advising the Scottish Government on the benefits of the refrigeration industry to the Scottish economy. His commitment to giving back, combined with his sharp wit and natural storytelling ability, makes him a speaker who resonates with audiences far beyond the technical world.
Speaking:
Whether he’s recounting how two Turner Refrigeration apprentices ended up running a national contract side by side, or sharing the secrets behind winning billion-pound deals, Stephen brings warmth, humour, and insight to every stage he steps onto, not to mention his tales from his connections in the football world.
Stephen Curran is proof that even in the coolest of industries, stories suspended in deep freeze can be defrosted and served “piping hot!”.
