Tim Peake is a British astronaut, test pilot, bestselling author and inspirational public figure who became the first British European Space Agency astronaut to visit the International Space Station. A former Army Air Corps Major, he has spent over 18 years flying combat missions and testing military aircraft before turning his sights to space exploration. Tim’s career began in the British Army Air Corps, where he gained his flying wings in 1994, earning recognition as the best student on his course. Over 18 years of service, he flew as a test pilot and officer on military operations, including missions in Afghanistan. In 2009, he was selected from more than 8,000 candidates to join the European Space Agency’s astronaut training programme. Six years later, he made history by joining the crew of Soyuz TMA-19M for Expedition 46/47, spending six months aboard the International Space Station. While in orbit, Tim performed the first-ever spacewalk by a British astronaut and conducted scientific research in microgravity to advance human spaceflight.
His outreach work has inspired millions of students through initiatives such as #CosmicClassroom, reaching over two million pupils across Europe. In recognition of his contribution to science, education and space exploration, he was appointed Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George in the 2016 New Year’s Honours. Since retiring from active ESA duty in 2023, Tim has taken on an ambassadorial role for the agency and, in 2024, joined Axiom Space as a strategic advisor for UK commercial spaceflight.
