Tony Robinson, the series presenter, is probably best known for his role as Baldrick in Blackadder and as the Sheriff of Nottingham in Maid Marion and Her Merry Men, which he also wrote. He has a keen interest in history and archaeology and is president of the Young Archaeologists’ Club. He is particularly fascinated by ancient Greece and the biblical lands of the Middle East.
His TV and film credits go back to the early 70’s. However, it was Blackadder which started in 1983 that really put Tony Robinson and of course Baldrick on the map. He wrote and starred in a children’s series, Maid Marion and her Merry Men where he play The Sheriff of Nottingham. It ran over four series between 1989 and 1994. Tony’s passion with archaeology appeared on TV with Time Team where he was the presenter. That started in 1994 and ran for nine years.
History:
Tony had another passion, History. Programmes like Tony Robinson’s Romans and Britain’s Real Monarch were aired in 2003 and 2004 on Channel 4. Climate Change was another subject of interest and in 2009 Man on Earth was broadcast.
More History programmes followed and in 2013 Tony presented Walking Through History which ran on Ch4 for 4 series. Tony was now presenting for both The History Channel and Discovery. Programmes for them included Tony Robinson’s World War 1 and Tony Robinson’s Tour of Duty.
Between 2019 and 2021 Tony presented Britain’s Great River, which was about The River Thames. Tony followed the river over it’s full 200 plus miles from it’s source in the Cotswolds down to the Thames Estuary and the sea.
Sir Tony Robinson received a knighthood in 2013 for his public and political service.
Tony has written a number of books, mainly on history but his autobiography No Cunning Plan was published in 2016.
A great choice as an after dinner speaker Tony was often persuaded to attend as Baldrick when asked to speak but not these days .
