Jason Plato is a professional British Touring Car racing champion. He was also a presenter on Channel 5’s Fifth Gear which he first presented in 2004. Jason has won the British Touring Car Championship on two occasions, Once in 2001 and again in 2010.
It was in the 90’s after a very successful spell in Karting when Jason Plato turned to F3 and Formula Renault. Wins in both these categories were considered necessary in order to move to F1.
Jason managed to persuade Sir Frank Williams (Williams F1 team founder) to allow him to drive the Williams Renault Laguna and with great success. By the year 2000, Jason had swapped his Renault for a Vauxhall. He was now driving an Astra, which he called “a brilliant bit of kit”. The car was considered one of the best in the championships. Jason Plato was again taking wins, right, left and centre.
A number of drivers were also keen to break into the US’s NASCAR circuit, Jason was no exception. To do this, you had to get into the UK equivalent, ASCAR. Here, Jason found himself driving the US built Ford Taurus but it wasn’t long before BTCC beckoned again. This time it was the Italian team SEAT and in 2004 Jason was no driving and winning with SEAT Toledo’s.
Jason remained SEAT’s top driver and in 2006 was now driving the SEAT Leon. He stayed with SEAT for four years and had great success with SEAT’s Diesel Leon, winning the BTCC. This was the first ever diesel to win the championship. SEAT unfortunately decided to stop racing in BTCC and Jason was on the move again.

By now Jason had started appearing on television. He was a regular presenter on CH 5’s Fifth Gear with Tiff Needell and Vicki Butler-Henderson. He also was a co-presenter on CH 4’s Driven with Mike Brewer (Wheeler Dealers) and Fellow rally driver Penny Mallory. Sky One saw Jason appear in Mission Implausible. This was a game show where Jason competed in a number of hair raising stunts.
