Roger Tilling has been the voice of University Challenge since 1997. Known for pronouncing impossible surnames at great speed live, the show is watched by over 3 million viewers nationwide every week. From announcing Her Majesty The Queen at The Royal Variety Performance to The British Soap Awards, and Never Mind The Buzzcocks. His voice was also used on Top Gear. Roger Tilling is one of the most well-known and trusted voices on British television.
He is also in high demand as an awards host and “Voice of God” announcer. Over 200 blue chip companies from Lloyds TSB to Shell to T-Mobile have chosen Roger for impact in their corporate productions and some of television’s greatest documentaries have also been narrated by him.
His broadcasting career has spanned every radio airshift around the clock on independent radio, live announcing for the ITV network, as well as voicing trailers of BBC1, BBC2, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 and Sky.
Roger Tilling is also a qualified private pilot and Aeronautical Engineering graduate. It was no surprise when British Airways chose Roger Tilling as the voice for BA’s inflight entertainment.
He used to be the voice of Family Fortunes. That was for 70 episodes back in 2002. Also, BBC producers have often pulled Roger in to read for Panorama. 2005 saw Roger now doing voices for a number of nature programmes. He has always been a popular voice over on TV commercials. His Voice of God has been put to good use at The Royal Variety Performance and The British Soap Awards. If your car is no older than 2005, you may find Roger barking out instructions via your car’s Sat-Nav. His voice is now in a number of car manufacturers Satellite Navigation systems including Jaguar and Toyota.
He’s not just a one-voice wonder. His vocal acting range and versatility means that he is highly sought after for providing character voices for computer games. Also for animated productions and movie trailers. His television commercials include everything from I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter to Shreddies to Peppa Pig. Roger has also narrated over 100 documentaries for BBC, ITV and National Geographic. He has also regularly been part of the panel on BBC Radio 4 podcasts.
Having originally graduated with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of London and subsequently becoming a private pilot, Roger continues to follow all aspects of science, technology and aviation. He also has a strong passion for travelling and his globetrotting has taken him all over the world, exploring places off the beaten track from North Korea to Peru.
